The Nature of the Work.

I graduated BA Fine Arts from Falmouth College of Art in 1996, followed by Postgraduate studies at Exeter University. I am a painter and printmaker and have exhibited at regional and national level.

I have had privileged access to elite sporting events and the photo finish imagery used at these venues has had significant influence on my work practice.

My work deals with the passage of time.  The continuously changing landscape intrigues me and my work explores the small variations both within and around it.

I am interested in the difference between lunar cycles and the modern Gregorian calendar - which encompasses social annual events.

The work is sequential and expresses itself in terms of time lines – each strip representing a day of work. This methodology is based upon traditional time chronicles, the earliest is possibly that of the Christian theologian Eusebius in the 4th century.

Each strip in my paintings may contain the following information:

  • Ephemera – postage stamps, tickets and newspaper cuttings all of which act as official registration of Gregorian time.

  • Personal details - birthdays, holidays as in a daily diary.

  • Time of working each day appears on each strip.

  • The lunar cycle and other natural phenomena – solstices, eclipses, earthquakes and storms.

  • Orientation - geographical data including postal codes or map references.

In addition some paintings may conceal stories of concurrent events of personal, local, national or international nature, whilst others use poetry as a point of departure.
My studio practice is deeply rooted in expressionism but has also been influenced by a number of contemporary artists, of which I would cite On Kawara, Garry Fabian Miller and Susan Derges.
